Pammal Sankara Eye Vision Centers project
Vision
To help eradicate preventable blindness
Mission
Make vision care local and accessible to all segments of society
Goals for 2022
Create 40 vision centers (VCs) by the end of 2022
Serve a population of greater than 115,000 people around each VC (total targeted population 4.7 million)
Benefit over 720,000 people over 5 years by preventing blindness
Why Vision Centers as opposed to outreach camps?
- Outreach camps have a limited time frame and a limited audience
- Outreach camps are limited to identification of Cataract and Refractive errors
- Outreach camps can’t effectively screen for all other eye ailments
On the other hand, Vision Centers
- provide a permanent presence in the community and provides access to quality eye care close to home
- Patients can be flexible with the dates
- Comprehensive eye screening is done
- Provides access to affordable eye care – Proximity and safe access to a complete range of qualitative eye care services is expected to help patients seek eye care
- VCs are enablers of tertiary care. A lot of tertiary care tend to be chronic – like Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy etc
- Disease control requires compliance to treatment and regular follow up. VCs are better placed to ensure this in patients in their service areas.
- Tele-opthalmology – Comprehensive eye screening facilities in Vision Centres including consultation with the best Ophthalmologists through tele-ophthalmology
Vision Centers work
We know that vision centers provide immediate and lasting benefit to the population. From our thirteen vision centers opened in 2021, some have operated close to one year, and we are on track to
Treating 90,000 patients
Identifying refractive errors in 30,000 patients
Identifying a need for cataract surgeries in 12,000 patients
Identifying Diabetic retinopathy in 3,000 patients
Identifying other eye disorders in 4,500 patients
Locations of Vision Centers
With the help of Rotary’s Project Orange, we are rolling out 40 VCs
